What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior used to gain power and control over a partner. It can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation.
Types of Abuse
- Physical: Hitting, kicking, or using force to hurt you.
- Sexual: Forcing you to participate in sexual acts or touching without your consent.
- Stalking: Repeated, unwanted contact that makes you fear for your safety.
- Psychological: Using words or actions to control, manipulate, or harm you emotionally (including controlling your money).
Safety Strategies
A safety plan helps lower your risk of being harmed. Because danger often increases when you leave a partner, planning is essential.
⚠️ Important Safety Tips
- Avoid trapped spaces: During an incident, stay away from rooms without an exit (like bathrooms).
- Keep it secret: Do not tell your abuser you are planning to leave.
- Document everything: Save photos, texts, and recordings of the abuse in a safe place the abuser cannot access.
- Firearm Safety (Safe Harbor Law): You can ask police to temporarily remove guns from your home if you are in danger. Contact local law enforcement for help.
Legal Protections
Jail Release (JRA)
If arrested for DV, the abuser must sign an agreement to stay away from you before being released.
Note: You can ask the court to waive these conditions in writing.
